Law and Compliance

In the year 2003, The Department of Motor Traffic called out for a tender in order to initiate the Vehicle Emission Testing (VET) Project in Sri Lanka. The VET program identifies vehicles which exceed applicable emission standards and places them through a repair and certification process. Testing and Certification is mandatory and is tied to the issuance of a vehicle’s Annual Revenue License.

The Testing Process

  • Step 1

When you arrive at a LAUGFS Eco Sri Center, one of our officers will greet you and get the required information from you such as engine number, chassis number, vehicle registration information, etc.

  • Step 2

Vehicle visual inspection will be conducted to initially check on vehicle’s smog levels, oil leakages, smog exhaust conditions, for any irrelevant noises coming from the vehicle, etc. before putting forward to testing. This is conducted to determine whether the vehicle will fail or pass the emission test and to save customer time and energy. If there’s any issue identified at the visual inspection, the officer will inform you and provide technical guidance how to fix it.

  • Step 3

If there’s no issues identified at the visual inspection, you will be eligible for emission testing

  • Step 4

You will be requires to pay the relevant fee according to the vehicle category.

  • Step 5

At the testing bay, relevant officers will conduct the emission test of your vehicle. Once completed they will direct you to the relevant officer to collect the emission report.

  • Step 6

If your vehicle have passed the test, Congratulations! You will receive the emission certificate

  • Step 7

If your vehicle have failed the test, you’ll be given a fail report with instructions. One of our officers will also provide technical advice on which areas of your vehicle needs to be inspected. Don’t worry, you are entitled to 02 free re-tests within 60 days to repair the vehicle and get your vehicle’s emission re-tested.

Advice to Help Your Vehicle Pass the Emission Test Procedure

Diesel Vehicles

  • Your vehicle should be at its peak operating temperature. To do this, we advise running your vehicle for 30-minutes of moderate driving.

  • Flush your vehicle’s exhaust system three times by pressing down on the accelerator rapidly a several times.

  • When in line for testing, turn off all additional functions (such as air conditioner, lights, wipers, radio, etc.). Ensure your engine is still running.

  • Clean or replace your air filter & fuel filter.

  • Check your silencer.

  • Check the injector nozzle condition & ensure there is no mismatch.

  • Check for fuel injector fouling or mismatch and repair or replace as required.

  • Adjust your turbocharger or replace as required.

  • Examine governor, fuel rack and injector timing for possible adjustments.

  • Repair or replace parts as required.

Petrol Vehicles

  • When in line for testing, turn off all additional functions (such as air conditioner, lights, wipers, radio, etc.). Ensure your engine is still running.

  • Check your vehicle’s vacuum hoses for cracks, leaks or blockage. Repair or replace as needed.

  • Check your EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve & Lambda sensor for proper installation and functional operation.

  • Ensure your air filter & fuel filter is clean and in work

  • Inspect, clean or replace your spark plugs & wires.

  • Adjust your air-fuel ratio.

  • Inspect and adjust your vehicle’s choke.

  • Repair or replace system parts as required.

FAQs

At Eco Sri, we truly wish to realize our vision for a cleaner and greener Sri Lanka. To accomplish this vision, Eco-Sri utilizes only the latest technology and equipment in over 100 locations throughout its testing procedures to ensure that our customers receive the best possible experience throughout the testing process. Our high skilled employees are trained and equipped to ensure that you receive all the information and support you need throughout the testing procedure, with minimal waiting time and maximum efficiency.

The type of pollutant monitored varies between Diesel and Petrol Vehicles.

For Diesel vehicles, we test for Exhaust Opacity and Carbon Particulate Matter levels. This refers to the opacity of smog emitted from vehicles which are being tested.

For Petrol vehicles, we test for CO and HC emissions within exhaust emissions. We also analyze levels of CO2, O2 and Lambda generated to gain a better understanding of the internal combustion of your engine, allowing us to give you highly accurate readings.

Pollutant emission from vehicles is highly toxic to the environment, contributing significantly to heat levels, polluting water bodies and damaging plant and animal life. Colombo’s poor air quality and hazardous breathing conditions are also worsened by these emissions. By ensuring each vehicle is tested, together we can work towards a greener and cleaner Sri Lanka.

Fuel wastage is extremely common in Sri Lanka, particularly in highly urban environments like Colombo. The results of the test can help determine your level of fuel wastage, allowing us to provide you with advice on how to minimize this wastage and improve your mileage in the future.

A vehicle emission test is required prior to re-licensing of a vehicle.

With over 100 locations and 150 Mobile Locations, Eco Sri is well equipped to serve your testing needs at your convenience. For a full list of our locations, please check our Locations tab on our website or click Here.

An original Certificate of Registration (CR) or original Vehicle Identity Card (VIC) along with your vehicle is required. If your vehicle is leased, a CR or VIC copy which is certified by your leasing company will suffice.

Yes. If the trusted party has the required documentation needed for testing, they can take your vehicle for its emission testing.

You can opt to take your test within one month prior to re-licensing, however, we highly recommend taking the test as early as possible to avoid emergency last-minute circumstances.

In the event that your vehicle does not pass the test, our operators will provide you with definitive information and support as to the testing procedures and which areas failed the tests. Our staff will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have and provide advice to assist you in passing your test by providing you with a comprehensive VER (Vehicle Emission Report).

The VER will give you a detailed view of vehicle diagnostics, the testing procedure and systems to repair into prior to re-test. We highly recommend that any subsequent repairs to your vehicle are made by experienced technicians who are trained and properly equipped to perform emission-related repairs. Eco Sri gladly provides the service of offering you two free re-tests within a 60 day period.

Caution and vigilance! Taking good care of your vehicle and regularly monitoring for irregularities will go a long way in ensuring your vehicle is minimizing its impact to air pollution.
